Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ours is a Title I school, which is considered highest poverty, so our students are in need of many tools to help them build a stronger educational foundation.

I teach a very diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds, many who have little to no access for personal computing at home or the computer literacy skills to teach their parents how to use technology.

Having the technological resources to learn how the computer works and how to build one can be a skill they can use for life and can pass onto others, along with a nice career in Information Technology (IT).

My Project

I want my students to evolve beyond the typical projects that we are accustomed to. Because we lack sufficient education with the technology of today, our projects are limited to a website with questions or making a PowerPoint. Our students are in need of many tools to help them to learn in the language of the 21st century which is technology. This is why I have a custom PC builders club.

By teaching the students how the PC works and what the pieces do, they can learn how this technology can be used across all levels of STEM and beyond.

My students have asked for this club for a few years, but we haven't had the resources to buy the pieces to build a custom PC. Custom PC building can be very expensive, that is why we will build 4 Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ (B Plus) Retro Arcade Gaming Kit. This is a light weight computer that can be built for gaming and every day use, but is very low cost. We will also need 1 10.1 inch amazon fire tablet with a case stand to record and document our students building the computers.

My students live in an area with high poverty levels. It is not easy for parents to buy them a computer. But by using the old saying "teach someone to fish they can eat for life", which we can teach these kids how to build a PC so they can build the technology they need, but at a lower cost.
