Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky enough to work with incredibly intelligent, witty, and resilient teenagers from all over the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. My students come from diverse ethnocultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, but attend seven different high schools within one large high school campus in the Bronx. Since 2017, I have been working to reverse a trend of decreased student library usage.

As the campus librarian for the 3,000+ students who share the building, my goal is to make the library one of the most popular and welcoming spaces in the building!

Our library was just remodeled so during the renovation process I maintained a smaller, mini "library" space that students could visit during lunch or after school and curated popup library experiences that traveled to students.

My hope is that our library serves as a place where students are excited to find out what's new, check out culturally relevant and diverse books, learn about the world around them, spend time with peers, and explore their creativity.

My Project

One of the most popular library offerings this school year has been our anime club. The club is open to all students and brings young people together around their shared love for Japanese culture and media. At a recent school wide club event, anime club was the most well-represented club; meetings average about 20 students after school. Students from 4 of the building's 7 schools have attended anime club meetings. As of November, over 70 different students had participated in anime club.

Because our students get to school around 8 AM and after school activities start around 3:30 PM, it is important to offer students something to eat during special events.

Last year, anime club had used a small, air popper to make popcorn during club meetings. The process was noisy, slow, and labor-intensive. Having a popcorn machine would speed things up a great deal and help attract more students to the library. Earlier this year, the students had fundraised to purchase a variety of chips, but mice got to them. The popcorn packages are more shelf-stable and smaller so they can be stored in rodent-proof containers.
