I work at a Title I school with 100% of my students coming from a low-income background. In fact, I work in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Houston,TX. This neighborhood and students have been affected by Hurricane Harvey and recently affected by the tropical storm, Imelda. Our families are still recovering. Everyday my students come in eager to learn. This is the first time a majority of my students have been to school. School is the safest place for some of the students. Everyday I try to incorporate different learning strategies in an engaging way to keep them wanting to learn. My goal each day is to challenge each of my students to keep progressing in their learning despite everything else that may be happening around them.
My Project
The Legos and STEM building items will be used in my classroom for the after school club I am teaching this year. Students will meet with me twice a week. Using the Legos and STEM building items will help the students with mathematical skills, learn to work together in teams for a common goal, to help them with problem solving skills, and to help them focus on one task for extended amount of time. The students will be able to transfer these skills into their classrooms and at home.
The students will think they are just playing after schools without realizing they will be learning skills that will help them to improve with their academics and behavior.
Each week the students will work in teams of 3s and 4s to work on the building project until they have completed it. Then they will be able to move on to the next building project.
Our school really could benefit from an after school program like this. As a teacher I believe implementing the Legos and STEM building items for team projects could make huge impression for our school and a lasting impact on our students.
