Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Environmental Science at a low income and a high minority school population. I teach mainly 11th graders, but do have some 10th and 12th graders as well. The students that take this class are lower level students that are too low to take chemistry....about one third are Special Education or ESOL students.

These students tend to be less motivated that the regular students and need lots of "hands on" activities to keep their interest and make it "real life" to them.

I would like sulfur dioxide test kits for the students to see the affects of sulfur dioxide pollution on different types of plants. I also would like to have my classes test car exhaust for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons. These are real life pollutants that the students are exposed to and their interest will be very high.

This sulfur dioxide lab and the car exhaust demo kit will motivate students in learning more about air pollution and the impact on their lives. Your support will provide students high interest labs keep the kids interested in learning and keep them in school.
