My Students

I work in Brooklyn with students who are on the Autism spectrum, have emotional and learning difficulties, behavioral concerns, and speech and language impairments. My goal this year as a member of our special education team, is to make our school the special education model school for our district (and eventually the entire city!). My students are wonderful and fun, full of energy, and eager to learn. We are a magnet school in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and our students come from all five boroughs of New York City creating a diverse and engaging learning environment.

My Project

I am a Black, gay man with a White mom and a Black dad and I was raised in Kentucky. I never saw myself reflected in anything in school and it would take well into my graduate studies for me to finally not only see myself, but recognize my own beauty. I want better for my students. I work with BIPOC students within an underserved community. I want them to see themselves, their families, their friends, and their peers in everything that is being taught and in every aspect of school. This inclusive library will give teachers access to a range of books that cover various identities, families, social justice events, students without shelter, and students who are neurodiverse.
