My Students

Autistic children have many challenges! They want to be like a typical child. My students are aware of these types of challenges and they struggle daily with social issues and academic issues. Books are so much more engaging when read on the Nook and that is what my kids need. They deserve to learn.

My 3rd grade class is a very special program called ASD Nest.

It consists of 12 typical students and 5 students with autism. The goal is to include the high functioning students in real life, real world everything so they can grow up to be smart, productive individuals both socially and academically. My class is awesome. The environment is one of kindness, caring, and nurturing on the part of ALL the kids. The ASD students learn social skills by watching the typical kids interactions. They are supported by the kids in every way that any child would be supported and included. It's amazing to watch. Anyone that walks into my room notices the calm, caring environment in which all the students are working and learning. The ASD students are wonderful kids. They are funny, smart, kind, caring, and sometimes challenging..but what kid isn't? They desperately want to be like all the other kids, accepted and that is our ultimate goal! We are a title 1 school and could really use your help.

My Project

The reason I am asking for 2 Nooks is because children learn in different ways. One day I gave my most challenging student, who would never read a book, MY personal Nook. I downloaded a fairy book for her. (Her favorite)She read the entire book and even answered critical thinking questions! I had no idea she had this skill. She just needed another approach to reading..the Nook. Since then I have downloaded math games, reading games, word games, and other books. My students read and play the games in partnerships and they are learning! Yes, even my typical kids love it! Even they have different learning styles, we all do! I have seen so much growth, enthusiasm, and engagement among all my students. The only problem is I don't have enough to go around! I will use the Nook as a resource to motivate my learners, they can do so much with it. It's an amazing tool and I already know they love it and have seen success.

Donations to my project will make a huge impact on my ASD students.

They will develop a love of learning, they will develop social skills as they partner up with their classmates, they will fit in! This is what it's all about. As a teacher, I do my best to meet their needs. I feel this is a need that my ASD children would benefit from tremendously. It's another modality for learning. It's more visual and engaging. We would love 2 more Nooks! I want to see my students succeed and gain confidence!
