My Students

Our urban district has just added French as a second option for the middle schoolers at our school. We are the first of 7 middle schools in the district to offer this option. Many of my students are native Spanish speakers looking to expand their horizons. They are eager learners but need extra supports for building their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills given their various backgrounds and abilities. They deserve a well-rounded opportunity for language learning in spite of limited funding for the subject.

My Project

My students are incredible 7th and 8th-grade students from a very diverse inner-city school. 100% of my students receive free lunch. My students can be very challenging at first, so I try to build a positive and trusting relationship with them. A lot of my students come from traumatic and broken homes, and I work extra hard to make my classroom as inviting and homey as possible. This means providing them with healthy options for snacks which students have come to rely on. Each of the items on my wish list are things that I have been buying myself and bringing in to the classroom. I know students will eat these choices because THEY HAVE BEEN! Kids come into my room, even when they don't have my class to pick up a healthy snack.

No more Takis or Doritos and other inexpensive, non-nutritional junk food.

They look for these no corn syrup, protein and nutrient dense snacks instead. Those that can afford it have even asked their own families to buy snacks like these at home. Snacks they didn't even know existed before, never-mind enjoyed! It's very gratifying to teach them about a healthier lifestyle, and help them experience it even though my subject is French!
