This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As city dwellers, my students know that it can get HOT in the city during the summer months. This is due to the urban heat island effect, which explains why urban areas can get so much hotter than their suburban or rural counterparts. But it is one thing to experience the urban heat island effect, and it is another to prove that this concept is real, and is impacting students on a day to day basis.
We want 4 infrared thermometers to help students measure outside temperatures of different surfaces to quantify the urban heat island effect in our city.
With these four infrared thermometers, students will be able to measure the temperature of different surfaces outside, such as asphalt, concrete, brick and grass, and generate data of what sun and shade temperature values. With this quantitative data, students will be able to prove, with data, that the urban heat island effect is really impacting them and the people in their communities. It is one thing to qualitatively say "it's hot out" and another to be able to prove with science that this is something real happening on a daily basis.
