My Students

My students live in a low income community making us a Title I school which is considered high poverty. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to participate and learn new sports outside of our Physical Education classroom.

Most of our students are first generation immigrants from countries all over the world and have not been introduced to many of the traditional sports in the United States.

My goal as a Physical Educator is to spark a love for physical fitness and introduce activities that promote lifelong fitness. At my school, most of the students are English Language Learners and have difficulty building relationships with each other. They have found common ground when learning new sports.

My Project

My students have consistently asked for more variety in their physical education curriculum. They love being physically active and are eager to learn new skills.

Many students enthusiastically ask "When can we learn how to play badminton??" It is disappointing to both my students and myself when my response is that we do not have the equipment to do so.

The nets, racquets, and gymnasium floor tape will help bring our badminton unit to life. We currently have enough badminton racquets for only a third of our students per class period. In order to introduce badminton to our students we have been rotating the limited amount of equipment we have so that everyone gets a chance, however, this significantly lowers playing time.

The materials for this project will help our students and our badminton unit tremendously. Not only will my students have more opportunity to practice their skills but we will also be able to provide them with a real game setting using the nets and floor tape.
