My Students

I'm an elementary school science teacher in a low income urban area comprised of mostly minorities. A number of students are in temporary housing with their families, or are foster children, or are living in other difficult situations. For many of our students, the time they spend in school is the only safe and stable circumstance in their lives.

Many of our students are struggling with disabilities, either academic or emotional, and it's challenging to hold their focus and interest in the classroom.

Fortunately many students enjoy science because I plan activities that are interactive, engaging, and hands-on.

My school recently completed our final year of a federal magnet grant which allowed us to create a beautiful science lab. However, there are still many supplies necessary for my science investigations, activities, and projects; with our magnet money gone, my school has nothing in our budget to support my science curriculum going forward. I can only afford to pay so much out of pocket, and then I will have to resort to teaching from boring textbooks that do little to inspire, excite, or ignite my students' passion for learning.

My Project

As part our third grade energy unit and fourth grade electricity unit, my students are learning that energy can be transformed from one type to another.

Building their own electromagnets will be a fun and exciting way for them to witness the transfer of energy between a magnet and a battery!

Using metal paper clips to attach a loop of wire to a battery, students will be challenged to figure out how to use a magnet to make the wire loop spin. The transformation of the magnetic energy to electrical energy will not only make the wire loop spin, but will make their heads spin as well!

This fun and exciting introduction to the world of energy transformation will be part of a hands-on unit exploring novel ways of utilizing energy. I especially want to focus on utilizing renewable various types of renewable energy. Today's children will be responsible for brainstorming creative solutions to our energy crisis; it's vital for young children to realize that they already have the intelligence and creativity to solve real-world problems!

My students will love this fun and creative way to transform energy, and I can't wait for the investigation to begin!
