With your help, reading can be as easy as "A, B, C!" I teach a fantastic group of 21 first graders in a fast growing area of South Carolina. Our elementary school is brand new, in its first year running and everyone is excited to be a part of it!
First grade is the most critical time in a student's elementary school career when reading skills truly begin to emerge and grow. It is important that students are given the independent time to practice their skills everyday in order to get better. The challenge I face is the lack of appropriate, leveled texts that they can read during this time.
I have seen what a difference ABC books make in child's reading from the few books that I already have. It's a comfort for the students to have the alphabet there on the page, so even if they can't read every word, they are automatically filled with some confidence in knowing that letter. Then, they can usually put to use all the strategies I've equipped them with to read the rest.
