It's All in the Weather

My students need 2 Pro weather stations, water cycle model, weather instruments, tools, and other supplies for studying weather and climate.

My Students

Our school is set in a suburban community, in a large metropolitan city. Even though it is in a large area, it feels like a small community, and sheltered from the bigger city.

Military housing sits adjacent to our school and in the local area.

Many of our students have parents that are currently deployed. The students at our school come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are neighborhood children, some ride a bus from other neighborhoods to attend our school, and many of our students fill out a "choice" application to attend our school from outside our neighborhood.

Our school offers a challenging but rewarding program, with excellent, student-centered teachers. Our science lab serves all the children in our school, from TK through 5th grade, where students participate in hands-on science and engineering enrichment activities that help to prepare or encourage them to take on a science mindset and develop critical thinking skills.

My Project

In order to study weather with multiple grade levels, we will need two weather stations and accessories, batteries, water cycle models, thermometers, sturdy crayons, and some other tools to help us with this in-depth focus. We would like to set up to separate weather stations to compare results in two different areas across the city and to upload the data to Weather Underground.

This year in the science lab, we are focusing on the theme of weather.

The students will be tracking weather and climate, keeping data, and comparing the data to previous information. They will learn about the different tools and technology used to measure weather and climate. In addition to learning about weather, we will have some engineering projects that will allow students to develop models for how we can reduce the human impact on our planet. This is a theme that goes along with the goals of the Next Generation Science Standards and helps to prepare students for becoming globally aware citizens that are interested in finding solutions to environmental problems.
