This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Kicked the bucket", "Costs an arm and a leg", do you know what these idioms mean? English Language Learners have a very hard time understanding them.

The majority of my students are English Language Learners.

They've never heard lots of the idioms that they read in stories, making it harder for them to comprehend what they read. They think most idioms are hilarious because they just don't make any sense to them.

My Project

"A picture is worth a thousand words." Visual learning cards and illustrations will help my students understand figurative language and in turn will make them better readers with better comprehension. The learning games will give them an opportunity to practice their newly acquired vocabulary.

Learning academic vocabulary and figurative language is a big part of the fourth grade curriculum.

Students must be exposed to idioms, multiple meaning word, similes, metaphors, homophones, synonyms and antonyms. These materials will expose my students to all the skills they need to become better readers and speakers.
