I teach first grade in a rural area that doesn't receive funding like the schools that are located closer to town. They come from poor income families who struggle to provide the basic daily needs of their children. These students often don't have access to technology at home.
I teach first graders who are like sponges ready for knowledge!
This age group is learning so much so fast that it's a job in itself just to keep up. They learn through touch and manipulation.
My Project
This year, we are required to teach a science or social studies lesson for 40 minutes a day. We are not given any materials or supplies to help us teach these units. Young learners need to touch and have visuals to help them relate to new topics.
I will use these TIME magazines to help supplement my social studies lessons.
We will read the stories and build off the information that is presented. They will be a part of the unit that is being taught and will be a concrete way to engage in the information presented. The students will then be allowed to take these home and share what they have learned with their parents.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
