Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

THESE KIDS ROCK! The Modern Band of our school is not like your Jazz Band or any other conventional ensemble. They are a working band for every function that takes place on campus, from pep rallies to convocations and visiting guests. They can no longer be contained by these walls.

The Modern Band is to our school what The Roots are to Jimmy Fallon.

They come to class to prepare a working set list of songs selected by them, some by request, for events on campus. They stand out from any other music program like ever before because they're in charge of the show. This gives them total ownership of their own education while preparing them to work after high school as musicians, giving them a leg up on other students who go to college without this level of professional experience. These young adults defy convention and are breaking barriers because they're not expected to succeed, given the school's supposed socioeconomic location and status. The given indicator is the percentage of students receiving free lunch. Here, that would be more than 65% eligible. They are identified as high risk, because of other factors. Do these student know this, that the odds are against them? You'd never know it to watch them play a show. They play like their lives depend on it.

My Project

Donors like you have already supplied a professional guitar amp. Now our bassists need an amp that can keep up. Having sold these before I taught, I know this will serve the students who wish to play a pro rig without having to plug into 8 speakers and 1000 watts. The amp can be used for live shows, in the studio and even just for practice with headphones. The headphones requested are for the music lab, to be attached to each workstation, giving the student engineers the ability to hear a mixdown before finishing a recording project. Too often, I have a student who can't afford basic ear buds. Now, nobody gets left behind. Lastly, the "snake," is a tool that will allow the musicians to plug into one location on stage, and have the sound carried back to the mixer, from DonorsChoose.org, where the live sound is being mastered in real time. This is a common tool of the trade and allows the engineer to hear the band in its true context, permitting him/her to improve the sound as needed.

The Fine Arts are integral to the total human experience, therefore essential to the core curriculum.

By contributing to this project, you are helping to keep the arts a part of the total experience, exceeding the norm where dreams and ideas become the norm. The most exciting part in all this is that they're being invited to perform beyond the district. These young musicians will leave here with more than just book knowledge when they move to the next stages of their lives. That's our goal.
