My Students

My first graders want to READ READ READ!!! They want the chance to be proficient readers! By using the iPOD Nanos the students can listen to books AND record themselves reading! How fun is that? This is a great way to get our kids reading! It also helps their accuracy and fluency.

We are a low income rural school in Texas.

We have the best students ever! My class is super enthusiastic and are eager to learn everything they can. Just like every child today they are intrigued by technology. Our schools are faced today with competing with video games and TV. By bringing in more of what the kids LOVE (technology) it will help feed their love for reading! There are some in our school that don't get to experience the joys of technology. By bringing it into the classroom, it helps the kids experience the world around them.

My Project

These iPODS will definitely get my students pumped up about reading. I love the fact that they can listen to their "own" book. With the Nanos they can record themselves reading. This will help them see, or rather hear, exactly what they sound like. It will help them better understand what expression in reading truly is. With the iPOD shuffles, more of my class can participate at one time in a listening center. Listening to reading is so important to accuracy and fluency. These iPODS will tremendously improve our listening center. We only now have a tape player with headphones. It is hard to get different books on tape. With the iPODS I will be able to download a broader selection of books for my kids!

The students in our school don't always come to us with the background knowledge to be successful in reading.

Many of our students don't have parents who read to them. Many of our students don't have a stable home life. We are sometimes their safest place to learn and grow. By helping these children to be proficient readers we are also helping their chance for a better life.
