Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

3rd Grade Math is for sure all about place value. Every single day of the school year, we talk, utilize, and remind students about the importance of place value concepts for all of their mathematical operations. Providing my students with graphing, sometimes called quad paper journals since day one, will give them the necessary structure and confidence they need to succeed as young mathematicians.

Using a squared paper journal has many advantages for kids, especially at the elementary level.

First of all, it helps with the neatness and organization of their work, preventing mistakes and reducing the stress and anxiety of not knowing where to write numbers. In 3rd grade, we introduce place values that are new for them, like hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands, which sometimes may feel a little overwhelming for some of these students. Grid paper is a good scaffold that they can use all year long to increase their understanding of place value concepts, as each digit is clearly separated by busy grid lines. This graphing journal will significantly help my students in math class with skills such as basic addition and subtraction skills, comparison of numbers, area and perimeter, polygons and 3d shapes, using number lines, fractions and lastly, multiplication using the standard algorithm.

Additionally, these composition books would also be used as interactive math journals, allowing me to keep all the student's work in one place, at the same time that they could go back and review previous lesson's material. Having it all in a journal will diminish the struggle of having a lot of loose paper lying around. Lastly, it is important to mention that my school is located in a very low socio-economic area, so buying a journal that is almost $5 each would be a burden for some families.
