My Students

Imagine trying to teach students about cells, germs, and tiny organisms without being able to really SHOW them. Showing them pictures on Google just doesn't cut it. Science is meant to be discovered hands-on!

I have a FABULOUS class of 22 fourth graders in Georgia.

We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. One child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together. I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in ability in my classroom, but all of my students can improve with the requested materials. Each child deserves the chance to be an active participant in their own learning.

My Project

I am requesting 2 microscopes, prepared slides, and blank slides, as well as a digital microscope. I envision the students being involved in their own learning. Science is meant to be learned hands-on, not just reading out of a textbook. I want the students to swab their mouths and view their own epithelial cells, investigate the differences between animal and plants cells, and/or have the chance to come up with a creative possibility. When talking about this project with my students, the boys thought that looking at snot would be a great idea and my girls decided that fingerprints would be cool to look at up close. Those sound like slides I definitely want to look at, too!

I do not remember much about my science textbooks from elementary school.

My favorite memories include looking at a sample of pond water under a microscope and dissecting frogs. My students are so inquisitive and would really benefit from being more involved in their own learning. We're ready to give up looking at pictures on Google and get busy creating our own!
