Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach kindergarten through 5th grade in a science lab at a high needs school in Virginia. This is part of a special program to strengthen science skills and interest at the foundational level.

I have been asked to run a science lab and we do units on cells and microorganisms with inferior quality tools. I want to bring the world of the invisible to the visible with quality microscopes to improve interest and get these kids excited about science.

These new microscopes will provide clear crisp images that the students can thoroughly understand and get excited about. The built-in digital camera will allow them to capture images and write essays about what they saw which will include pictures to help them bring their experience to life. Our first experience will be to analyze water samples from salt and fresh water for microscopic life forms and compare and contrast these life forms. We will also examine the differences between plant and animal cells.

Your help is essential to providing my students with exciting experiences that will remain with them for life and possibly inspire some of them to take up a profession in science as adults as well as improving test scores.
