My Students

I teach in a high needs school in Brooklyn, NY. My students come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Despite these differences, my students give their all to be sure they understand any topic that is given to them.

My classes consist of gifted students, general education students, special education students and English language learners.

In my classes, we are always exploring. I try to incorporate as much technology as possible. Students are able to use laptops to complete online simulations, Webquests, and research information on their own.

My Project

I am requesting 35 subscriptions to Science World magazine to help promote content area literacy! By using "Science World" articles rather than articles printed off of different websites, I can be sure that students are receiving articles that are both current and high-quality. Students will not have to ask WHY they are learning something, as they can see what is going on in the science world today. Scientists are constantly publishing journal articles and explaining their research in different science journals. Students will be able to feel that they are doing work that is similar to scientists. These articles will supplement all inquiry-based activities that are done in the classroom.

I plan on using these Science World magazines to incorporate the IF/THEN Collection into the science news that is present in the magazines.

For example, Science World will often highlight various jobs in science. After reading the article, students can use the IF/THE Collection to find Scientists that are women within that job. They also present current science news in various of fields of studies. Students can use the content presented in the magazines to study and research women who have contributed to that field of science.

These magazines will help students strengthen their critical thinking skills, deepen their vocabulary, and allow students to use current articles to draw real-world connections to the materials learned in class. This subscription will only help students on their path of education.
