My Students

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."-BENJAMIN FRANKLIN My students master skills through guided practice in a nurturing environment. Enhancing my classroom by accessing popular music will foster the kinesthetic learning that is the cornerstone of our success.

My high school students have autism, a lifelong developmental disability with a wide spectrum of symptoms that frequently affects an individual's abilities to communicate, socialize and adapt to unpredictable environments.

My students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, live within NYC, and are placed in our specialized program to meet their educational needs. Most of my students will require assistance throughout adulthood. During vocational education lessons, my students perform functional tasks that are varied and tailored to each student's abilities and preferences. These skills are designed to have practical applications to the work sites they will attend during the next phases of their education.

My Project

In the classroom, we "work" to fill die-cut paper orders, as well as create party favors and gift baskets. Each lesson begins with my instruction and I assign tasks for the remainder of each period such as paper cutting, candy wrapping, box assembly, bow tying, sorting, and filing. The students enjoy listening to music while completing tasks. This fosters a fun "work" environment that enhances meaningful socialization skill development. Recently, our access to online radio stations has been limited. The students would like to access playlists on their personal devices and/or local radio stations. Unfortunately, I do not currently have a radio for use in the classroom nor connection accessories for mobile devices. With a boombox and accessories, I could offer students options for listening to music while they complete their tasks. I incorporate a behavior plan for selecting music genres and find the music to be an effective motivation tool for my students.

I have worked with students with autism for 22 years and know firsthand how incorporating music into lessons is invaluable for motivating students and enhancing language development.

The students ask each day for access to the radio or playlists and it is difficult to redirect them from these requests to their assigned tasks. Improving my students' access to music will enhance their experiences in my vocational education classroom and potentially lead to increased productivity. Thank you!
