Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Whatever you might think of Williamsburg, yuppies, hipsters and trust funds, that is NOT our school by a long shot.

We are a Title I school, a classification recognizing that the vast majority of our students and their families are economically challenged.

With some 1,600 students in grades 6 through 8, over 60% identify as Hispanic or Latino, and about 18% of our students identify as Black or African American. A lot of our kids live in public housing.

We have a significant immigrant community, with many students being immigrants themselves, the child or grandchild of immigrants. About 1 in 20 of our students are so recently arrived that they are in English Language Learner (ELL) supplemental classes. About 1 in 6 of our students have modifications to their educational programs because of their physical, emotional or academic challenges and special needs.

Our students often do not have basic supplies. Their families are hard-working, sometimes struggling, but nearly all are committed to their child’s academic success, whatever their economic conditions.

My Project

Our computer lab has no printer toner. With a sharply reduced school budget outlook, we will not be able to purchase or get printer toner to present student work and student materials for several weeks or even several months.

By providing our students and teachers with printer toner, we will be able to provide students with the necessary tools to showcase their work.

Nothing makes students (and teachers!) prouder than when good solid work is displayed.

Your donation will help teachers provide students with a means of distributing their own work. We will also be able to print worksheets, study guides and other key materials for our students in our math and science classes.
