My students need the accommodations paid for to help us to have an overnight trip that combines the environmental stewardship and Spanish immersion learning. Fulfilling basic departmental needs prohibits us from exploring and nurturing these opportunities.

My Students

As a teacher at an inner city school, I am faced with the common problems that are indicative of teaching in an urban environment. Yet, despite these issues, I have been witness to a resilience and perseverance from these students that defies logic and helps them succeed. I want to expand and broaden their framework of the world by giving them an opportunity to engage in travel experiences that will have a multicultural and environmental stewardship focus. Many of my students have rarely traveled out of their state, much less out of their neighborhood. I want to open the world to them and provide the opportunity for them to broaden their perspective of the world and engage in it by combining service learning, environmental stewardship and language immersion. This program and the trips available will be available to students in grades 9-12.

My Project

This project will make a difference with my students by allowing them to have real-world experience where they can engage in practical ways and affect change in their community. This multi-disciplinary project initially combines environmental science/stewardship, community service learning of the horseshoe crab and connects this to the critical use of their blood with medicines made by pharmaceutical companies.

This initial trip is a building block as faculty seek to take students on international service learning trips to provide our inner-city students with multiple experiences to broaden their learning and perspective as a global learner, activist and 21st century student.

Groups will debrief about their experiences from the day and create a video journal of their project to share with faculty and other students of their experiences.

Furthermore, by taking the students to a Spanish restaurant where the second half of our day students will be required to speak only in Spanish to communicate their requests. This will help them to practice the language they have learned throughout the year and feel empathy for ESL students they may come in contact with on a daily basis and the struggle these students feel when living in another country and learning another language.
