Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It's a great day to be a Wellstone Lion!" This is the motto at Wellstone International High School.

Wellstone International High School is an all- newcomer high school in the Minneapolis school district.

Students come from various places around the world in search for a better life. The majority of students come to WIHS as refugees or undocumented. Many of our students are homeless and/or highly mobile. For many children, WIHS is the first experience of formal education. One way to support learners is to support home language development. Dual language resources, like the dual language dictionaries, encourage academic language acquisition in the home language as well as English. Staff's greatest desire is for students to find WIHS a comfortable, safe, validating place for personal and academic growth.

My Project

Students will be using the dual language dictionaries daily. With the Spanish/English and Somali/English dictionaries, learners will have the opportunities to learn how to use a dictionary. Learners will also have the opportunity to see their home language in print in the classroom. In addition, students will be able to gain knowledge of English vocabulary by using their home language.

This project will improve my classroom by validating students' first language through print.

Also, students' independent work confidence will also increase with the dictionaries. I foresee students using the dictionaries to explain concepts to peers and staff. I also predict using the dictionaries to better communicate with my students to increase positive relationships with school.
