Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has a rich tradition of arts education. We often have multiple generations of a family attend the school and participate in our arts program. For many students it is their first exposure to whatever arts discipline they choose while others have some experience from elementary school or from their home life.

The majority of my students live in low-income housing while others come from middle class neighborhoods that surround the school.

My students are hardworking, dedicated to improving their craft, and extremely passionate about participating in music. For many of them, school is the only outlet for their love of music. As an alumnus myself, I take great pride in our legacy and it is extremely satisfying to see young musicians further that legacy every day.

Music is entertainment, but it is also a release that can have a profoundly positive effect on students. With limited resources at home for most, it is imperative that their schools provide them with opportunities to nurture their passion and talent, regardless of their socioeconomic status. For many students, music is what they excel at most, and provides them confidence and hope. Hope shouldn’t be a privilege.

My Project

My students are very passionate about music. They want to play everyday and be able to practice at home as well. Normally, an instrument will be used by multiple students throughout the school day and taken home for practice by different students on different days, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, that is not considered a safe practice.

Having more instruments available will allow my students to actively participate in making music while keeping them safe.

The more they are able to play, the quicker they will improve. As they progress, they will be able to work as individuals and as a team to improve their musicianship. As they improve as musicians, they will experience the process of creating music with others and working together towards a common goal. This will foster a sense of teamwork, collaboration, long term achievement, and patience in achieving a goal that is greater than the sum of its parts.
