My Students

We are a middle school in NYC DOE's District 75 program (self-contained schools for students with disabilities), located in Corona Queens. We are housed within a larger, general education middle school and often collaborate with the general education community. We are a close knit, largely Spanish-speaking community, where everyone works to help one another. Our motto, "Positivity is Power", is one we truly live by.

Our students are energetic, creative and enthusiastic but face a lot of challenges adapting in academic and social settings.

In addition, many of our students also face challenges with communication. In our art program we make sure that every student explores an array of materials and projects. Through that exploration and curiosity, it further enhances their options for expression and communication.

My Project

The materials for this project will allow my students to explore colors in various ways! With the canvases, my students will be able to explore colors and color value by drawing (or using tape or whatever other material used to differentiate) crystals and painting them! This also exposes them to a different surface material as well as further utilizing our painting easels. Also, learning about crystals will enhance their knowledge of colors within nature.

My students learn best when projects are hands-on and can be applied to real life.

With the glass frames my students will continue our color unit by learning how to make their own faux stained glass windows! What better way to create their own version of a stained glass window by use actual glass material? It's one of my favorite projects to do and it combines not only art history, but it also serves as a good transition into our shape and form unit afterwards.

Both lessons focused on these projects will give my students the experience with new materials which many may not get the chance again, as well as learn about colors within nature and architecture.
