Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is a diverse melting pot full of many different personalities, learning styles and interests. My goal for my students is to be able to read and write at or above grade level by the end of the school year. My biggest challenge is that my students' reading and writing levels range from pre-K to 2nd grade. While they enjoy reading, it has been a struggle to get them interested in curriculum reading and writing. They do, however, love interactive hands-on lessons that incorporate their individual interests. They love to give hugs and drawings to show how much they care. Our school is a Title 1 school in a low-income area. 95.8% of our students are from families living far below the poverty line. 60% of our students are English language learners. I have a classroom full of eager learners with tons of potential. The items that I'm requesting will help me unlock their potential and stimulate their imaginations. I try to instill in my students that education is the key to a better life and that by becoming great readers and writers, each of them can do great things!

My Project

Non-fiction reading/writing and academic vocabulary have become a big part of our daily lessons. This has brought some rather boring materials into my classroom... With this new color printer, visually appealing high impact graphics can be added to the otherwise boring handouts. 50% of the students in my class are English Language Learners. My ability to provide them with engaging visual aids will help them better understand the materials and become fluent English speakers, readers and writers! I will be able to print pictures for research, art projects, reading material, and visual aids for my students.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to books at their reading level at home.

Students without access to these books are less likely to practice their reading outside of school. Only 4% of the students who entered my class this year were reading at or above grade level! Having books at their own reading level will make reading practice less frustrating and increase their confidence. I will be able to print out colorful leveled readers for my diverse learners to take home and practice. This will help keep my students engaged in the curriculum and ease the learning process. I teach at a Title 1 school in a low income area. Only 50% of my students have access to a computer at home and less than half of those students have access to a printer. I believe that bringing this pop of color into our room will help keep learning fun and positively impact the lives of each student.
