Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a great school in the South Bronx where students come to school ready to learn despite their circumstances. Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students live in housing projects, shelters or in single parent homes. Despite some of these struggles our students see our school as their second home. They feel safe and loved by all of the staff. We are a true community of learners striving to be a little better each day. Despite this sense of community many of our students are unable to come to school with the supplies they need. I teach third grade literature and art to over sixty students. I teach all the reading and writing fiction units and also incorporate visual thinking strategies using art pieces to develop accountable talk. I often see my school as, "The Little Engine that Could," because every year we make progress. This year we are going to be a city wide Renewal School where we will open our doors to schools in NYC to come visit and see our best practices!

My Project

Purchasing new school supplies for a brand new school year is fun and exciting. Unfortunately, many of the families at my school are unable to purchase all the supplies requested by teachers because they can't afford them or lack the access to these supplies. I want to relieve any stress from students and their families that can't afford school supplies and keep their focus on the learning. They shouldn't come to school worrying about things like post its, markers, pencils or sheet protectors.

My project allows my students to begin the school year with supplies they will need to enhance our units of study and help them stay organized.

My students need post it notes to jot down ideas, questions and words they have trouble with. I create mini charts for my students to have as a reference and the sheet protectors will keep those safe!

This project will allow us to start school with everything we need for a productive, fun and organized year.
