My students need triple beam balances to accurately measure supplies during their science experiments, so that they have the same results each time during labs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in Holyoke, MA. Many of my students are from low income and poverty households. Recently we have received many students from Puerto Rico due to the hurricane. Our school was taken over by the state two years ago because of poor student performance. Many of our students come to school excited and ready to learn. It is hard to teach science without science equipment, though.

I want to provide the best learning environment for my students and really want to provide an avenue for careers in science.

My Project

My students need high quality materials to use for their STEM science challenges and lab trials. Having the same high quality materials that students in high income communities have access to is important for my students to feel successful and get excited about science. By introducing how to properly use a Triple Beam Balance students will understand the difference between "mass" and "weight". The mass of a small object can be more than a larger object with less mass. Sometimes the concept of mass, weight, and density can be difficult to understand.

Since becoming the Grade 5 & 6 Lead Science Teacher in my school and part of a district wide Science Team, I am trying to build a fully equipped science lab for students to use in my school.

My students need to know just how important quality equipment is when constructing an experiment and collecting data. I feel that having the ability to use Triple Beam Balances in class will make a big difference in their lessons.

Students also need to explain their data and what they did during a lab experiment. Using old or unreliable equipment will not provide them with the accurate data they need to succeed in generating an accurate conclusion.
