Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a self-contained program for students who are impacted by Autism. Many of my students are non-verbal and have difficulty learning and communicating without given significant support.

We are a fairly small school district and have limited access to technology at this time.

My teaching partner and I serve 14 students at this time and will be serving 16 (or more) students in the fall. Many of our students are non-verbal or barely verbal but are delightful young people who have communication needs. When our students have unmet needs and they are unable to communicate, they often become frustrated and either become aggressive or will self-exclude from activities with other people. Many of our students communicate best through visual stimuli such as pictures or symbols. When they are provided with an appropriate method of communication and learn how to use that method, we find that our students are able to learn at an increased rate. Some of our students, although nonverbal, are able to read and participate in math activities. Their ability to communicate will help them be more successful across all subject areas.

My Project

I would like to build a library of devices that can meet my students communication and learning needs. At this time, I have one Augmentative communication device for the whole class and that is supporting my most impacted students (who are learning cause/effect) but the I-Touch technology can help support my students to take learning and communication to the next level. There are so many applications that are now available to help students with Autism. For example, there is one application available that will turn the I-touch into a device that will help my students communicate. There are other applications that can be used for learning reading, writing and math skills. There are so many applications that can help my students learn.

My goal is to make each of my students be the best individual that he/she can be.

I have limited resources but with the help of others, like you, I can build up the resources that I need to teach my students and help support them in becoming independent, whole adults and helping them to compensate for their disabilities.
