My Students

Howard Gardner, author of "Multiple Intelligences," responded to Tony Wagner's book,"The Global Achievement Gap," by exclaiming, "Tony Wagner delineates what skills are needed in a globalized era...and how today's schools could be transformed to cultivate tomorrow's skills." This is where I come in.

My eighth grade United States History and Exploration elective students attend an Open Enrollment school, with students coming from all corners of a large, urban district.

They are curious and imaginative. They demonstrate initiative and are collaborative. They are critical thinkers and problem solvers. However, they need the tools to help develop skills that are needed in the globalized 21st century. These tools will allow students to access, analyze, collect and save data and information that can supplement information in a traditional textbook or information that cannot be found in it.

My Project

The students, while in my class, have access to four fully functional computers and one unreliable printer. This one printer does not go far with 30 to 35 students in each of my five classes. In addition, many students do not have the access to a computer at home, never mind a printer. The printer will help develop written communication as they create animated stories about America's past. It will help improve communication skills as they share the creation with the class. It will allow a means of accessing and analyzing information in a way that past generations of students never had an opportunity to discover. As little as it might seem, a printer can change the dynamics of a lesson and transform it in to something amazing.

I want my students to be prepared for the 21st century.

Today's global market demands that the next generation be adaptable and know all facets of a project. It's a new way to think about education. It's a new way to discover history. As Tony Wagner stated in his book when he borrowed from the ancient wisdom of Rabbi Hillel, "If not you, then who? If not now, then when?"
