Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Want kids to know what is going on in the world that surrounds them?? I do, and a lot of times kids live in a bubble that includes only what is immediately surrounding them and don't realize that there is a WORLD beyond their neighborhood. TIME for Kids can help them realize beyond their bubble.

I teach in a big city in Illinois where many students do not have a lot of opportunities to travel outside their neighborhood to explore the world around them.

They go to a school that is predominately Black/Hispanic and over 95% free/reduced lunch. The kids I will be teaching this year are 4th graders and some of them I have had since 2nd grade. They are a very intuitive bunch and very curious about what is around them. They love to ask questions and learn, however many aren't given that opportunity to ask/learn outside of my classroom, they are busy taking care of younger siblings, or helping out their families in other ways. This subscription is one way they can feel in charge of their own learning and take it upon themselves to become more aware of their own world.

My Project

This year I am doing a "centers" based literacy program where students will have the option of completing different stations based upon their need and interest in different reading activities. I would love to be able to offer them to sit on the carpet and pick up their very OWN magazine and read about the world around them in a way that is written just for them. Having "Time for Kids" magazines will allow my students to read nonfiction real world information at their reading level.

You will make it possible for my kids to feel celebrated all year through with allowing them to take home the knowledge of the world around them, every week.

This will in turn help them became more aware citizens that care for the world they live in!
