It Takes Instruments to Make a Masterpiece

My students need enough instruments for everyone to have the best possible experience with music, and this metallophone will bring us one huge step closer to that goal.

My Students

We have classes with three more students than we have instruments. That means that three kids have to sit and watch while their peers create music. It also means that, instead of progressing instruction, we have to repeat everything we do so that those three kids will get a turn.

My students love music and thrive through creativity.

They don't only reproduce music, they offer ideas and insights that take their music to the next level. They are often given the opportunity to make up their own dance moves, improvise on Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels), and even decide on the form that their pieces will follow. These are students actively enjoying and learning about music, students who are developing a love for music that will follow them the rest of their lives.

My Project

I am requesting a soprano metallophone to bring us one step closer to having enough instruments to cover every student. Right now we are three instruments short, and even adding one metallophone will make a huge difference. If you choose to fund this grant, I am confident we will be able to secure two more instruments by 2013. Giving every child their own instrument will not only ease the tension of having to pick who will play and who will wait, it will make my teaching more efficient. Right now I have to do everything twice, putting two students on several of the instruments and making sure that they take turns. If everyone had their own instrument this repetition would become unnecessary and we could get further into the music making process.

The enjoyment of music through well equipped music classrooms is a special advantage of American public education.

Kids love making music, and instruments allow them a wonderful opportunity to go beyond singing notes from a book and actually create their own. These kids love composing, improvising, notating, reading, and performing music, and they develop a special creativity essential to an outstanding educational experience.
