This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a diverse Title I high school located in New York, housed within a campus of many other schools.

BIHS is one of a handful of public high schools in NYC that only admit recent immigrants; many of our students enter the ninth grade just a few days or weeks after first moving to the U.S.

Our students come from over thirty countries around the world -- Yemen, Honduras, Tibet, China, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti, to name a few. They also speak well over thirty different languages, all at different levels of English language proficiency. All of our students learn English through their content courses such as math, science, literature, social studies, dance, and art. They work together collaboratively to help one another with both their language skills and their understanding of life in this new country.

My Project

Many of my students do not know the difference between mass and weight. Throughout the year, students will be investigating various phenomena that will require some form of measurement. Whether that be the length of an object, the volume, mass, or temperatures, my students will need access to the proper lab equipment.

Giving my students access to experience based education is my greatest goal.

My students will perform labs where they will need rulers to measure the differing lengths an object travels based on the amount of force being applied. The digital balance will help dispel misconceptions between weight and mass. Spring scales will be used to measure the force of objects. By using those tools, we will also be able to measure an object’s density. As the US slowly continues to convert to metrics, with your help, my students will become more aware of the metric system.
