A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I aim to be the Ms. Frizzle of science teachers to my 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
Each lesson is approached from multiple modalities: reading, writing, taking notes, lectures, watching videos, hands on projects (that usually incorporate other subjects, especially art) and teamwork.
My students love art and science, especially when the activity is hands on, involved partners or teams and is a competition.
They are grades 6, 7 and 8 all in one combination class. The student's abilities range from low to ready for high school classes. Since its a mixed classroom, we required to cover three years of science in one, on a three year rotation: earth science, physical science and biological science.
My Project
I have 26 students, so each one will build their own personal rocket. We will divide into teams for the launch. With two launchers and altitude finders, we can alternate launches to save time. The students will have to use their understanding of physics and earth science to create the best fins/bodies for their rockets. They will have to use math to figure out altitude, speed, etc. I am going to have the students paint their rockets to make them personal, so throwing in some art there too!
What is possibly cooler than rocket science to a middle school student?!
I think this project will bring together all the subjects and give the students a real, hands on learning experience.
Also, this project is sure to have challenges for the students to overcome and teamwork to succeed.
Rocket science is sure to develop a love of science and provide my students with a once in a lifetime experience that they will remember forever.
