My Students

My students are incredible. I could never describe them in one word. They are students that come from low-income families and have a wide range of special needs.

These students never let their disability stop them from reaching their goals.

They work hard, harder than an average student. We have a lot of fun together and they truly are "my kids." They make me want to be a better teacher every day and I am always looking for ways to help them.

My Project

One Crazy Summer...if that doesn't sum up what this summer has been, I don't know what will! Heck it has been one crazy year! But one good thing that has come from all of this craziness is that I have had the time to stop and reflect about how I am teaching my students. One of the big questions that I kept coming back to was, am I offering enough multi-cultural books in my library? And the answer is a huge NO!

It is so important that my students are able to read stories with characters and story plots that they can relate too.

Because of this, I started to research books that I could introduce to my students as a class set. One Crazy Summer by Rita Willams-Garcia is the perfect book to start off with. It is the an historical fiction story set in 1968 about three sisters who go to spend time with their mother and get introduced to the black panthers as well.

This book would make a great class set for my students because we can read the book together, analyze the characters as a class, and most importantly, they can take the books home. With the new Covid-19 restrictions, It seems that the students will only be in school every other day and because of this, I need enough books so that every student in my class can take the book home and read it during their remote learning sessions.

Please consider helping my students receive enough books to take home and be successful, as well as, read a book that is multi-cultural. During this time, I need to show my students that they can still learn at home and that there are books out there that they can relate too!
