My Project

It all began with a song about 5 little apples. My PreK students with special needs have minimal language and are just beginning to engage in social interactions but when I sing this song about apples their eyes light up and a smile brightens their face. They become engaged and excited to participate and even the picky eaters are beginning to try apples for the first time. So what better theme for our first student-centered unit of study but...Apples!

I've selected apple-themed materials that I know will captivate my students and engage them in learning and thinking more deeply.

My student love counting, sorting, puzzles, and math so I know they will all be clamoring for a turn with the apple fractions and apple seed numeric puzzles. We'll place the attribute apples in a bin of water and work on our fine motor skills using the slotted spoons and tongs to pick up and sort the apples. We'll also use the apples and pretend apple pie toys in our pretend play area where we are learning to sequence daily activities.

Along with these materials we'll, of course, experience real apples by tasting and making apple sauce. We'll connect the theme to learning about our five senses and the plant life cycle. I know my students will be inspired by this unit and gain so much from these various materials.
