Help Ms. Ringewald

Isn't Arnold Schwarzenegger President? This is a question I have heard numerous times during class discussions, and being posed between my sixth grade students. I teach sixth grade English and History in an urban, high-need, year-round public middle school, and I am requesting a subscription to "Weekly Reader" for each of my students, and one classroom atlas and world almanac to help my students learn more about the world around them!

My students have grown up in incredible circumstances. As sixth graders, many of them have more education than their parents have ever attained, yet because of a variety of factors, they are anywhere from 1-3 years below grade level. Because there has been such a drive in recent years to improve reading scores on standardized tests, many elementary school teachers have cut their social studies and science curriculum to make more time for reading instruction. As a result, when my sixth graders arrive in middle school, many of them lack basic knowledge of how our world works-- many believe that Arnold Schwarzenegger is our President, or that Los Angeles is a state.

To help my students improve their knowledge of the world and to improve their reading ability, I am requesting a subscription to Weekly Reader for each of them, and an almanac and atlas to share as a class. Having a Weekly Reader for each student will allow me to design weekly current events lessons for my students. By spending time each week discussing current events in class, my students will become more informed of the world around them, which is especially important given that this is an election year. In addition to helping them learn about the world around them, this Weekly Reader subscription will help them improve their reading ability; although my students do not currently have much knowledge about current events, when we discuss current events, they are incredibly engaged. A major obstacle to helping improve students' reading ability is finding material that is both interesting and written at an appropriate level; this magazine is written for students reading at a 4th-6th grade reading level, and will surely grab their attention! I am requesting a subscription for each of my students so they can complete activities in their magazines and take them home to share with their families. We also need a World Atlas and an Atlas to support our studies.

It is always important for young people to understand the world around them, but in this election year it is even more important for them to understand how our electoral system works and what is at stake. You will make it possible for my students to gain an understanding of these vital systems, and will help them grow into more informed citizens!
