My Students

Let my students experience the same wonder Copernicus did going out into a starry night and gazing up at the moon.

My students live in a multi-culturally diverse neighborhood in a large urban district in Northern California.

English is usually a second language and 100% of the school is free lunch. We have few problems because the students, parents, and community respect and believe that the best education is being provided to their children.

My Project

Remember back when you were eight? You looked up at the mobile hanging from the classroom ceiling learning about the objects in our solar system. The impact would be life-changing if each student had their own telescope. This project is to fund enough refracting telescope kits for all the third graders at my school to make their own. The kit is simple to put together, but provides the same type of telescope Galileo used to first study the moon.

Imagine the joy and astonishment the students will feel as they build their own telescopes and have the chance to see the craters of the moon, "the Evening Star" Venus, and maybe a glimpse of Mars.

The best field trip of all is waiting for my students outside in their own backyards. We want our students to be inspired to reach new heights, to graduate from high school, to go on to college. Can this simple tool do that? Knowing there's a bigger world gives a child something greater to strive for.
