My Students

Our state has cut our funding during this school year. This has forced our local district to remove our supply stipend for this school year. This fact has limited my ability to purchase lab supplies for this school year. My students should not suffer due to budget cuts.

My students are from a low income, high poverty area.

They are all receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school has historically been a low performing school in an otherwise high performing district. We have changed this fact in recent years. We are still near the bottom of acceptable but are constantly improving. Our children are moving forward with their education and are starting to become achievers. Success is learned as well as science and reading.

My Project

I am requesting lab supplies that can be used in conjunction with our garden. We have started a school garden that will be used for research and class projects to inspire our learners. The chromatography paper and solvent will be used to see how plants are different and how photosynthesis is different among plant species. After completing this demonstration at an AP training this summer I felt that this would be a great experiment for my students. All learning levels can benefit from this activity. It can be as simple as seeing the different pigments of a given leaf to determining the amount of photosynthesis that occurs in a given leaf based on pigment. Seeing is believing. We deal with misconceptions in science that must be un-believed to be disproved.

Hands-on science activities are the best way to learn science.

Engagement of students in science makes the leaning real and relevant. When the leaning is real, students want it more and will go farther with their learning.
