Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work hard, even if they struggle. Since the pandemic, they have been struggling more in very new learning conditions. They are taught to be kind and show empathy towards each other. They are learning about the difference between equity and equality, and that there are some in the classroom with special needs. More than 90% of my students are living in poverty, and yet they will still donate spare change to any fundraisers that help the sick or the needy.

My students deserve the best education possible, which is hard to get with our school's budget.

I want them to know that I believe in them and in all of their potential and will find a way to get the supplies that they need even when the budget won't allow for it. They deserve to have a classroom that feels comfortable, safe, and like a home with everything they need. We are like a family in my classroom. My students know that I take care of them.

My Project

My 5th grade students are turning 11 this year. Eleven is a tough age. as They are in between being a kid and a very young adult.

We have started Book Club in my school to encourage a life-long love for reading.

Book Club is not a graded class. We legitimately read and discuss novels for fun. I would like to use the book "Eleven" by Tom Rogers for the next book club selection.

"Eleven" is about an eleven year old boy who doesn't want to be treated like a kid, but realizes that acting like an adult is much harder than he could have ever possibly imagined. The setting takes place in New York City on September 11, 2001. The students will be able to make connections between the character's life in NYC and their own. They will read how the character deals with the trauma of a life-changing situation. They may also make connections with trauma that they may have with the life-changing pandemic that they are living through.
