My Students

Transforming education and taking it to the next level Currently, I teach in a "high need" school in the inner city. My knowledge driven 3rd grade students are traditionally taught with chalkboards and textbooks. The community is poverty stricken, plagued with violence and lacks resources.

My classroom is comprised of a beautiful diverse group of learners with various interests, motivations and experiences.

Due to the lack of resources in the inner city, textbooks and worksheets are mostly used for instruction. I've noticed that my third grade students have shown a profound interest in calculating the distances of each planet in relation to the sun. They also have an interest in finding the area and circumference of planets. As a result, my students are very curious and ask a lot of questions about science and the relationship of science to the real world in which they live. I want to build an interest in careers that stem from the sciences at this tender age. My students are excellent at retaining and articulating information. They have continuously shown and proved this by their efforts despite their impoverished community. Please aid to provide them with a rich science vocabulary and understanding of the sciences.

My Project

The resources listed would tremendously spark an interest in science and other various careers that are associated with the field. True factual information that can be proved by a student is an accomplishment! At an early age I want to provide students with deeper knowledge of the solar system, the sun, celestial planets, mass, the make-up of important chemicals and evolution of the universe. I meticulously chose these items that I am requesting. We need non-fiction reading materials to support the facts and data calculations that my students are learning about. There are many reading activities that can be accomplished with the books listed. I also listed a DVD set for my visual and auditory learners. Lastly, I ask for assistance with the final resource: a model of the solar system, this is for my kinetic learners and visual learners. The model is a replica of the solar system, aiding in visually showing relationships of the planets and sun.

Non-fiction matters and is very vital in a child's understanding of the real world.

What better way to transform the traditional teaching methods than with an introduction to the solar system. So many topics and activities can stem from the main idea of the solar system. Please assist my eager beavers with the understanding of the magnificent world above the heads. Help me enrich my students knowledge base with rich vocabulary words such as area, mass, orbit, matter and diameter!
