My Students

At my school, the 8th graders are shaping a learning community this year around our new magnet theme of Global Studies and Humanities. As many have spent over a year out of school during COVID, they are excited to be together again.

My students are curious, resilient, and overwhelmingly multilingual, speaking Spanish, Somali, Ewe, and French, among other languages.

They deserve engaging and culturally relevant literacy work after a year at home. Many are coming into the year behind the curve in their reading scores because of the pandemic.

They are building up those skills through daily independent reading. We are working toward student-led book clubs, where students will choose from a range of texts to fit their interests and levels all around the common theme of dystopias (a perennial middle school hit!).

My Project

Middle school readers need accessible yet rich texts to develop a love of reading! That's why graphic novels are an asset in today's English classroom: they draw in reluctant, struggling, and multilingual readers with visuals that support understanding and add a layer of complexity.

The Giver graphic novel will launch our dystopia unit with an engaging shared reading of a classic dystopia that all students can access before we break into book clubs.

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a classic dystopia that has fascinated middle schoolers for generations by forcing them to confront questions about conformity, suffering, and happiness.

With these graphic novels, my students can read this classic swiftly and then deepen their learning with dystopia book clubs. They will choose from a variety of dystopias to match their levels and interests, and read them in student-led book clubs, connecting and comparing to The Giver as well as other dystopias.

Book clubs allow students at all reading levels to deeply engage and grow their skills as readers while making rich connections across texts.
