Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an elementary school as a dual language first-grade teacher. My campus is a low income, at-risk school that serves over 650 students. Almost 90% of the students at this school are economically disadvantaged, and most students read below grade level. My classroom will consist of about 20 amazing students.

My classroom is full of bright, humble, and dedicated students.

I enjoy walking into my classroom and greeting my students every morning and seeing them with a big smile ready for some learning. These students look forward to exploring new and exciting learning experiences. I would want to ensure that they enjoy every minute they have inside the classroom and be able to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through many interactive learning opportunities.

My Project

You might be questioning, why chapter books for first graders? Well, the answer is that my students have demonstrated their capability of being able to go above and beyond what they can do. Some of my students have had some struggles along the way while others have had it a lot easier, but one thing is for sure and that is that nothing has stopped them from trying their best and learning to their full potential. Reading is our priority subject in our Spanish classroom, and about 80% have reached their reading levels so far. I think that short chapter books will encourage them to feel confident and enthusiastic about reading the "big kids" books.

I strongly believe that these books will provide access to a richer classroom library that will promote an increased reading frequency and help them attain greater levels of reading achievement.

I always tell my students that there is no limit to how much you can learn and to always aim higher, to reach for the stars.
