My Students

My students are from a large, urban community that are interconnected and socialized. They bring a special blend of cultural diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences and pizzazz to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community; I have twenty-one vibrant students in my classroom with varying abilities and circumstances: temporary housing, doubled-up housing, and IEPs. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served.

My students are resilient, STRONG, and enthusiastic about learning.

The majority of my students read below grade level. They would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success in our newly established distance remote learning platform. As of March 13th, my students began learning at home. School will continue to be closed due to the COVID-19 virus for the rest of the school year. This presents a challenge, as most of my students do not have access to supplies in their homes.

My Project

I never imagined that I would find myself remotely teaching from home, and that my students would be learning new material through video conferencing calls and recorded home videos. Yet, here we are being innovative and making it happen!!

My ROCKSTAR students have blown my mind with their ability to adapt and rise to the remote learning occasion.

As their teacher, I want to keep that momentum going and meet their needs accordingly. My amazing students have been working incredibly hard using the assignments that I have given them with Google Classroom, YouTube, and Audible Stories. Now that we will continue remote learning through the remainder of the school year, live lessons are critical and honestly, what my students need more than anything else. The iPad that this project would fund would allow me to make recordings of me teaching for my students as well as help me to have multiple screens opened at once while hosting live class sessions. Additionally, I would be able to use sites such as screencastify to record- as adding extensions are prohibited on my work laptop. This is the gift that keeps on giving because once we return to the building, I will be able to add this iPad to my technology station for student use. Differentiation is key and vital to the success of my students!!
