My Students

My students are Title I Reading students. They come and see me because they are reading below grade level and many of them are economically disadvantaged. My goal is to have these students reading on grade level by the end of the year.

We are a Title I school, which means at least 30% of our students are economically disadvantaged.

Our school is a K-6 school with about 500 students in a rural community. I feel like I am extremely blessed with the students that I work with because they are so sweet and so eager to learn. They all have unique and wonderful personalities. They love when they are able to have "Read to Self" or "Read to Buddy" time so they can select books from my classroom library. Many of them ask to take the books home to read, too!

My Project

My classroom library is set up by genres and subcategories and fiction and non-fiction. The students are taught to pick out books at their "Just- Right" reading level. They then are able to pick out books to read that interest them or that are suggested to them. With the itouch, they will be able to scan books out under their name and scan them back in when they return them. It would be especially nice for those students who take my books home all the time. I have lost a lot of books and this would help me keep better track at them, so all of my students could benefit from their wonderful stories. With the apps we can download, they can even suggest books to each other or rate books that they've read.

Many of the students that I work with do not have books at home to read or books that are at their independent reading level.

They only have library once every 6 days so they only have an opportunity to check out books once a week or once every other week. My students see me every day so they are able to check out books to read at home. The more they read, the more likely they will be reading on level by the end of the year.
