I love reading books, but my students don't. It has become a problem lately. I want to use literature circles in my class this year. But I have a group of fourth graders who would rather stay after school, than read a book. Reading is such a big part in a student's education. How can I get that joy and interest back? I can use an iPod. I teach all subject areas to a group of 18 boys and girls in a small community. My students use technology in their everyday life, but not at school. I am still using a TV/VCR in my room. I started using my iPod in my classroom to show videos to activate prior knowledge when we start a new concept. The students really enjoy using the iPod, but I only have the one. If I had two more iPods, then I could run literature circles as stations in my room. I have taken workshops to help integrate technology into the classroom. My favorite was the iPod class. They showed us how to download books, short stories, and poetry onto the iPod for students to hear. With a simple attachment, six people can use one iPod. We also recorded messages and questions for the students to complete. Also we put activities on the iPod along with homework assignments. There are so many ways to keep students motivated and interested in reading and education. I need your help for this project. You can help me to offer an alternative reading program to my students that could cross over into other subject areas during the year. By using the iPods daily, my students will have a resource that will give them a head start into this technology driven society that we live in today.
