My Students

My students love books. They love listening to someone read to them and they love exploring books on their own as they discover the many words they can now read. Watching their excitement as they hear a favorite story is truly inspiring.

My students are very eager to learn.

Most of them come to kindergarten with very little background knowledge and life experiences. Books are a wonderful way for our students to explore our world. Our school is very small, with around 100 students kindergarten - 4th grade. We are a very close and supportive school and work together to create a wonderful learning environment for each student.

My Project

My kindergarten students are just beginning to learn how to read. At this early stage, listening to reading is a vital component of learning to read. Of course technology makes everything more exciting when you're 5! I want to combine their two loves, reading and technology, by using iPods in unison with books as a listening center. Students will be able to hold the book and flip through the pages as they hear the story read aloud to them through the iPod. Students will be able to navigate this center independently selecting their book and playing it without having to hassle with the somewhat old fashioned cassette tapes and CDs.

This project will make a huge impact on my classroom because it will allow an opportunity for small groups of students to listen to fluent readers, helping to build their fluency and comprehension.

The students in my class often don't have someone at home to read to them, which makes it even more important that we provide this very important and enjoyable activity in order for them to grow and develop as readers.
