My Students

As technology increases all around us, it is important that we teach students how to use and interact with this technology appropriately. One way to improve reading fluency and comprehension is by listening to fluent readers. A listening center is exactly what we need to help accomplish this goal.

My students are wonderful and eager to learn.

Some of their favorite things to do include dancing and singing, painting (of course) and cuddling up on a comfy bean bag to read their favorite story. We are part of a very small school in which we are the only kindergarten class. As a small school, we are able to get involved in our students lives and really make a positive impact on students and families lives. Teachers, janitors, cafeteria workers, nurses, and secretaries all play a part in enhancing each child's educational experience. Teachers not only develop relationships with students in their own class, but also engage with students outside of their class to help encourage academic success on all levels. We truly are a family that works together to help every student succeed.

My Project

My kindergarten students are just beginning to learn how to read. At this early stage, listening to reading is a vital component of learning to read. Of course technology makes everything more exciting when you're 5! I want to combine their two loves, reading and technology, by using iPods in unison with books as a listening center. Students will be able to hold the book and flip through the pages as they hear the story read aloud to them through the iPod. Students will be able to navigate this center independently selecting their book and playing it without having to hassle with the somewhat old fashioned cassette tapes and CDs.

This project will make a huge impact on my classroom because it will allow an opportunity for small groups of students to listen to fluent readers, helping to build their fluency and comprehension.

The students in my class often don't have someone at home to read to them, which makes it even more important that we provide this very important and enjoyable activity in order for them to grow and develop as readers.
