My Students

Students with Autism have something to say and need a way to tell us! We can use the iPod Touch with a program called Proloquo2go to give them a picture-based communication system that is adaptable and portable.

My students are lively, smart and challenging.

They are all diagnosed with Autism and attend a specialized public school in New York. Our classroom is designed to promote their academic and social development. Most of my students have moderate to severe difficulty with communication but have the ability to communicate using pictures and symbols to request desired items, answer questions, ask questions and socialize.

My Project

I am requesting 3 iPod Touches and cases. Once we have these dynamic devices we can load them with an interactive communication program called Proloquo2go. The beauty of this program is that it is completely unlimited and customizable to each user. The program is available as an app for the iPod. Once it is downloaded students can use the iPod to communicate by selecting pictures, symbols or words. They then select a key when they are ready to "speak" and the iPod will output to words they selected as speech. The iPod is a unique resource as a communication device. Most other devices have a set number of slots that can be programmed to say a word when a button is pushed. One of my students has a device that can hold 32 different words. The iPod's program can hold thousands. My final reason for requesting the iPods is their portability. Most devices are larger than notebooks and must be carried by students. The iPod can be kept in a pocket and is more user friendly.

This project will greatly help my students with communication.

Something as simple and yet so basic as being able to communicate and express yourself gives students a sense of contentment and pride. This is an educational tool that can help develop their speech and extend far beyond the classroom. This will make a positive impact on their lives in school, home and the community.
